BAYAMBANG-A P15-million corn grains center will be built in Barangay San Gabriel II here through the initiative of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the National Agribusiness Corporation.

The center, which will have post harvest facilities, dryers, and a warehouse, is expected to improve productivity of corn, one of the province’s major agricultural products.

Paz Mones, DA assistant regional director for Ilocos, with 3rd District Rep. Rachel Arenas and local officials, made an ocular inspection Thursday at the proposed site.

Once completed, the facility will be turned over to San Gabriel II Multi-Purpose Cooperative, which is expected to put up its counterpart fund, Mones said.

Corn farmers in the 3rd District neighboring corn-producing municipalities will be the primary beneficiaries of the new infrastructure.

“We are very proud to say that Pangasinan corn is really of the best quality,” she said, pointing out that corn from the province commands a farm gate price of P12.50 to P13.50 per kilogram.

She said corn farmers earn a net income of P40,000 to P50,000 per hectare in four months.#
