BANI–Blessed are the children of this town.

Recently awarded as the Most Child-Friendly Municipality in Region 1, this town was recognized for its efforts in helping abused children.

Haydee Rapivo, a nurse assigned at the Child Protection Unit (CPU), said it was the town’s concern for the children, particularly, helping abused children through her agency that helped win them the award.

“In Region 1, there is no other community-based CPU except the one we have,” Rapivo said in an interview with The PUNCH.

The CPU, initiated by the Municipal Council for the Welfare of Children (MCWC) chaired by Mayor Marcelo Navarro Jr., is supported by a grant from the non-government organization Plan Philippines Inc. and partly from the Development Fund of the mayor.

The agency offers help to sexually abused children and children in conflict with the law.

Ravino said her unit takes care of the processing of the cases with help from the Police’s Women and Children’s Concerned Desk, Municipal Health Office, and social workers in coordination with the MCWC.

The CPU served 26 cases from 2005 to 2006, mostly involving sexually abused children from this town alone.

In 2007, there were 22cases including victims from neighboring towns like Anda, Bolinao and Alaminos City.

The award was given by a multi-government panel that includes the Departments of Social Welfare and Development, Health, Education, and the National Economic Development Authority.-#
