STA. BARBARA—A housing project comprising of 88 units will soon be built in barangay Leet, three months after Mayor Reynaldo Velasco attended a seminar-workshop sponsored by Gawad Kalinga at the University of the Philippines and Ateneo.

Mayor Velasco signed the memorandum of agreement on Tuesday with Antonio Meloto, GK national president, and Lyndon Bonzon, GK regional coordinator, for the construction of the houses.

Under the agreement, there will be 88 houses that would be constructed on a one-hectare lot in barangay Leet donated to the municipality by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR).

Each unit will cover 40 square meters plus 10 square meters at the back as open space.

Velasco said the municipal government will build the model unit based on the design prescribed by GK within 30 days. Thereafter, the GK will organize and help build the other units.

According to the mayor, DAR is set to donate two more hectares, which would serve as the community’s common communal farm from where they can raise vegetables, chicken and hogs or where they can put up a livelihood center.

Meloto said beneficiaries of the housing units will be asked to plant malunggay and other vegetables in the open space at the back of their houses as a source for nutritious food.

The beneficiaries of the housing units should have plenty of food through their own initiative, he said. –LM
