Mayor Resuello: ‘Malicious and vicious’
TEXT MESSAGE ABOUT DRUG ARREST
SAN CARLOS CITY– The mayor of this city branded as “malicious and vicious intrigues”the text messages that circulated in the city and among local newsmen that he was allegedly intercepted and arrested in Baguio City on Dec. 31 for illegal drugs.
Their intrigues against me are so cruel. They never stop in destroying me,” Resuello told The PUNCH in the vernacular.
The report spread like a wildfire on New Year’s Day and this prompted him to deny vehemently the malicious allegations in a speech he delivered during their city’s founding anniversary night of Jan. 1.
In his speech, he said,” I know who are behind this attempt to besmirch my integrity, and I assure them that while you keep on attacking me, I will perform better in my job to prove them wrong,” Resuello said.
The mayor appealed to his constituents not to believe these series of intrigues even as he vowed to continue his father’s legacy when he served as three-time mayor here. Resuello’s dad, Julian Resuello, was gunned down inside their auditorium last April.
To prove the falsity of the text message, the young mayor said that if he were indeed intercepted and arrested in Baguio City as alleged by the texters, “Then why am I here with you?”
The text message said he allegedly paid P1.5million for his release.
The mayor’s retort were eventually backed by both Chief Superintendent Leopoldo Bataoil, Ilocos police regional director and Supt. Jane Aonson, region 1 director of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), in separate interviews. Both said there was no record of arrest made on Resuello.
Bataoil said “for the record, there was no apprehension, no operation on illegal drugs (was made) on Mayor Resuello”.
The regional director said Senior Supt. Noli Talino, the region’s chief of intelligence section, had confirmed this with their counterpart with the PDEA.
A source said the Baguio City Police Station was barraged with phone calls from local newsmen asking about Resuello’s alleged arrest.
Resuello said the past month, he was too busy preparing for the holidays and the city’s anniversary and only managed toleave the city for two days, Dec. 1 and 2, for the entire month.
He recalled that when his father was still alive and he was also still the vice mayor, they were together in the fight against illegal drugs.
He said he found the intrigues about his being a drug user as “sometimes funny” but admitted these irritated him.
He added he is willing to undergo a drug test, and even plans to require the city’s more than 800 city employees to do the same to prove that the city hall is drug-free.
The young mayor pointed out the absurdity of the text message out by reiterating his policy not to intervene during police arrests on illegal drugs, despite some pleas by friends to direct the release of arrested suspects.
He said he didn’t want his police to be demoralized if officials like him intervene in their work, especially the campaign against illegal drugs.#
