ALAMINOS CITY–Taking the ferry service plan a step further, a technical working group has been formed to look into the implementation of the public water transport system between this city, Dagupan and San Fernando City in La Union.

Alaminos Mayor Hernani Braganza said he and the mayors of Dagupan and San Fernando will soon be looking at a twin engine ferry boat which could possibly be used for the initial ferry services.

Braganza said the ferry service will cut travel time between his city and San Fernando to just one hour from the three-hour land trip.

Between Alaminos and Dagupan, the trip by boat will be 30 minutes compared with one hour by land.

Under the initial plan, four ferry boats will be in operation, each one with a capacity for 100 people.

The local governments are prepared to undertake a cost-sharing scheme to kick off the project but Braganza said they are also open to private investors.

He added that once the project is operational, they will be definitely moving towards privatization.

The ferry service will also be particularly important for Alaminos as it is seen to boost tourist arrivals in the popular Hundred Islands National Park.

Dr. Leonardo Quitos of the National Economic Development Authority has pledged technical support for the project.—LM
