Dengue alert on anew

THE city health office in Dagupan has reactivated its dengue surveillance system in view of the renewed resurgence of the disease.

City Health Officer Leonard Carbonell said the reactivation of the surveillance system was done as dengue fever has become an endemic disease in urban areas, like Dagupan.

“Walang pinipiling panahon ang dengue fever lalo na sa mga urban areas tulad dito,” Carbonell said.

In January alone, the city health office has already monitored six dengue fever cases. Fortunately, no fatality has been registered so far.

Carbonell said the cases were noted at the PNR site in Mayombo and in the Bonuan area.

“We are doing preventive measures against dengue fever,” Carbonell said, adding that they conducted a fogging operation in the affected areas.

Dengue fever is caused by day-biting mosquitoes and it can affect anyone regardless of age.

Apart from monitoring the disease, the health office is also actively pursuing its campaign for cleaner environment with the help of barangay health workers.

Carbonell said they are implementing the 4S mode in fighting dengue, which involves search and destroy of the possible breeding places of mosquitoes, self-protection by wearing long sleeved shirts or pants, seeking immediate medical advice if there are signs of possible dengue fever, and avoidance of indiscriminate fogging since it is costly.

In August last year, the “Itaob Mo, Giyera Laban sa Dengue” project was launched by the city government in coordination with the regional office of the Department of Health.

PSYCHIATRIC

Meanwhile, free psychiatric consultation and lectures were conducted at the Pangasinan Home Care Clinic in Dagupan last Friday.

Carbonell said three psychiatrists conducted the consultation for mentally-challenged patients.

They also conducted lectures on anger and stress management, which was particularly targeted for people who   are hot-headed and short-tempered.—CSR
