San Carlos karatekas are overall champs in PRISAA
SAN CARLOS CITY—San Carlos City karate athletes, powered by students of the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF), emerged overall champion in the recently concluded karate competition of the Region I Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA), hosted by this city.
The San Carlos City Karate Team won five gold medals, three silver and two bronze.
Frankie Sunga dominated both the Kata and Kumite categories. His fellow gold medalists were Benjie Cervantes, Jong Jong Calangian and John Arsenio Erguiza.
Silver medalists were Rizalyn Resultay, Jamaica Marie Flores and Mary Evangeline Melendez. All the San Carlos gold and silver medalists are students of the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation.
“Arduous training and superiority of techniques are the secret ingredients of their success,” said Philippine Navy Lieutenant Commander Ronald Vistro, the Philippine Karate-Do Federation (PKF) Coordinator and chief instructor of the winning athletes.
The PRISAA Karate competition was participated in by teams from San Carlos City, Dagupan City, Laoag City, La Union and Pangasinan II.
Coordinating with thePRISAA in the Karate competition were national referees of the PKF headed by Mr. Avelino Nene, chairman of the technical committee.
The martial arts training of the San Carlos City karate champions was handled by the Wado Ryu Karate-Do Institute, Inc. in this city.
Vistro said that trainers of the Wado Ryu Karate-Do Institute had represented San Carlos City and won gold medals in the Palarong Pambansa and the National Open and Philippine Olympics Festival.
Winners in the PRISAA local event will represent Region 1 in the national PRISAA to be held next year in Zamboanga City, Mindanao.
This is the second time that karate event has been included in the PRISAA.—NCC
