Five local artists shine in national art competition
A group of young artists continue to stir the local art scene by recently winning five awards in the prestigious 60th AAP (Art Association of the Philip -pines ) Annual Art Competition 2007, making it the ‘winningest’ local art group in the national art tilt held December 8 at the GSIS Museo ng Sining in Pasay City.
The five national awardees from Dagupan City are: Jojit Solano, first place in painting; Ed Sevilleja, best entry in art photography; Raymund Dimalanta and Anthony Tañedo, honorable mention in sculpture and Bonifacio de Guzman, Jr., finalist in sculpture.
All are members of the Dagupan Artists’ Circle (DAC), a local art group that successfully staged the 2nd Dagupan Arts Festival.
Started September this year, the festival showcased the creative talents of the DAC members in the visual arts with a comprehensive art exhibition including photographs, paintings, sculptures and installations.
The exhibit was complemented by workshops in poetry, painting and photography which were open to the public.
“It is a fitting tribute to our collaborative efforts with the city government together with our supporters in our quest of putting Dagupan City in the national art scene,” said DAC president, Patrick “Kinig-tot” Bacolor, himself a multi-awarded artist.
The AAP art competition is undertaken in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Among its past winners were national artists and stalwarts of Philippine visual arts Botong Francisco, Vicente Manansala, H.R. Ocampo, Cesar Legaspi, Napoleon Abueva, Arturo Luz, J. Elizalde Navarro, Jose Joya and Ben Cabrera in the early part of their artistic careers.
Meanwhile, another DAC member, Romulo “Pipo” Domagas, qualified as finalist under the “The Beauty of the Philippine People / Portrait Award”(professional division) during the 1st Philippine Airlines (PAL) Photo Contest, a photography competition which aims to promote Philippine ecotourism.
