START the year right.

The Dagupan City government, in an effort to prevent injuries from firecrackers during the New Year’s eve revelry, has designated areas where people can light up their firecrackers.

The police, in coordination with the City Health Office and barangay councils, want the barangay plazas to serve as the firecracker zones, according to Superintendent Dionicio Borromeo, city police chief.

In an interview with The PUNCH, Borromeo said if there are no barangay plazas, village officials should identify open areas as an alternative.

So far, according to Borromeo, there have been no serious firecracker-related injuries reported but they want to take precautions for the New Year celebration.

The police are also on alert against the sale of firecrackers in the market found to be too dangerous having the effects of explosives.

Borromeo appealed to residents to return to traditional ways of welcoming the new year such as beating drums and blowing toy trumpets.#
