PENRO calls for vigilance to protect environment
Amid persistent reports of continued deterioration in the state of the province’s natural resources, the provincial environment and natural resources officer (PENRO) in Pangasinan called on the community officers to intensify efforts in protecting the province’s environment.
In a recent memorandum to the community environment and natural resources officers (CENRO), PENRO Leduina Co called on them to be proactive in the campaign against illegal activities, particularly illegal logging.
Co told the province’s CENROs to be more vigilant against illegal logging and other aspects related to environmental protection by intensifying monitoring and foot patrol works.
Matters of priority include untenured areas with high stumpage value based on this year’s Key Result Area on Forest Protection and Law Enforcement.
At the same time, Co noted that the budget allocation for Forest Protection and Law Enforcement increased by more than double this year although incentives for forest rangers remain lacking.
Forest rangers, she said, must be duly compensated in terms of travel and logistical funds to keep them motivated and maintain their effectiveness.
She said trained field officers must be able to anticipate and identify violations and correspondingly take legal action.
Co also encouraged the CENROs to maximize linkages with other stakeholders in the private sector involved in the protection of the environment.
“We link with them for a unified effort to avert abuses against Mother Nature,” she said in her memorandum. #
