Cruz supports Joey de V.
He does not know him personally but he believes he is telling the truth.
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz has voiced his support for Jose “Joey” de Venecia III, son of House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., who has recently blown the whistle on a controversial government deal.
Cruz also defended Joey’s recent departure from country, which, according to the church official, signifies that he has already spilled out the truth as he knows it and that there are threats to his life.
“It is definitely not a flight from justice, not a confession of crime that he left,” said Cruz, whose archdiocese is covered within the congressional district of the elder De Venecia.
Cruz said judging from the way the young De Venecia answered queries from senators on the broadband deal, he finds Joey’s words “coherent, truthful and even self-incriminating, which is the best of all.”
Joey’s Amsterdam Holdings Inc. was one of the bidders for the project but dropped interest after he was allegedly offered $10 million and told to “back off” by First Gentleman Mike Arroyo.
Cruz said his 34-year experience in the Church Tribunal hearing marriage annulment cases has helped him develop a keen sense on people who are lying or telling the truth.
“I believe him,” Cruz told The PUNCH, referring to Joey’s testimony.
Cruz also lauded the speaker and his wife, Gina, for the support they have been publicly giving Joey.
The prelate also dubbed as “providential” the reported rift between the House Speaker and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo resulting from Joey’s expose.
“I think the speaker has served so long the interest and has observed so long a fidelity to President Arroyo that sooner or later, it has to be stopped,” he said.#
