LINGAYEN–Barangay Nibaliw Vidal in San Fabian town and barangay Carriedo in Tayug town are among the towns recommended by Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez, provincial director of Pangasinan, as “areas of immediate concern” during the Oct. 29 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

Eighty two other barangays have been identified by Nerez, mostly in the western and eastern parts merely as areas of concern which are reportedly under threat by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army.

Nerez said the concerns over the two barangays have risen owing directly to presence of heated partisan politics and he has recommended to the Commission on Election that the two be closely watched.

He admitted too that there have been no sightings of NPA presence in these areas over the last four months.

Nerez based his recommendation on the recent killing of lawyer Alejo Dojilllo in Nibaliw Vidal and the gunslaying of Jaime Tolentino, a candidate for barangay chairman in Carreido, both of which are believed to be politically-motivated.

Meanwhile, Nerez said more than 10 people have been arrested and charged for violating the election gun ban.

Nerez also reported that no untoward incident has been recorded across the province during the deadline for the filing of certificate of candidacy of candidates last Thursday.

In Dagupan City, a peace covenant signing among the candidates was held Friday morning and the same was held Saturday in San Fabian town.

Lawyer Remarque Ravanzo, Dagupan city election officer, urged the candidates to use recyclable materials for their campaign materials for the sake of the environment as well as to cut on costs. #
