Illegal fishpen operators in city get 15-day ultimatum
WHAT the past city administration failed to do over a six-year period, the Fernandez administration hopes to accomplish in just a few months.
The city agriculture announced it is sending its third and final notice to owners of illegal fish pens before the end of the month to voluntarily demolish their structures or the city government will undertake the demolition.
City Agriculturist Emma Molina said she already sent two notices to owners of these structures but have ignored these both and were noted to have even increased the number of their pens in the rivers.
To be given an ultimatum are those who built their structures in rivers without securing their Aquaculture Lease Agreements (ALA) with the city and paying the fees as required by a city ordinance.
Molina warned that if the final notice will still be ignored, her office will start demolishing the illegal structures by the middle of next month at the owners’ expense.
An inventory showed there are still more than 100 illegal fish pens being operated all over Dagupan.
The continued presence of the fish pens have been found to have contributed to the series of fishkills in the past that resulted in millions of loses to investors and the bangus industry.—LM
