FVR to PGMA: Convene LEDAC

LINGAYEN- Convene the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) as the way out for the embattled Arroyo administration.

This was the advice of former President Fidel V. Ramos to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her embattled administration, noting the crisis that has hit the ranks of coalition leaders.

Ramos told newsmen after his speech during a program marking the ‘First 100 Days’ of the administration of Governor Amado Espino Jr. that the disunity could have been avoided had Mrs. Arroyo called a meeting of the LEDAC more often.

He noted that President Arroyo only convened the LEDAC last month to discuss some pressing matters although she promised to convene the same in a couple of months but no definite date was given.

“We must, as leaders, consult each other on what is the best thing to do and what is best for the sake of our nation and people,” Ramos said.

Besides, he said, there are many things happening outside the borders of the Philippines which impact on the country.

“The world is fast moving, the global economy is changing every day and so is our country, our Philippines. We must, as leaders consult each other,” Ramos stressed.

He said as President from 1992 to 1998, he used to meet the LEDAC weekly, specifically every Wednesday morning or effectively held 30 to 35 meetings while Congress was in session, out of the 52 weeks a year.

Attributing the economic recovery of the country during the Asian economic crisis partly to the series of LEDAC meetings under his administration, Ramos said, he convened the meetings almost as often as cabinet meetings.

The creation of the LEDAC was the first law he signed as President in 1992.

Ramos also deplored the endless political fragmentation of the Filipino people as evidenced by the wrangling between and among political allies.

Lack of unity, teamwork and solidarity among the present leaders of the government, whether those in the administration or opposition, is very apparent now, he added.—LM
