Another sports great has thrown his hat into the political arena.

Modesto Bonzo, 1976 Tour of Luzon champion, will vie for the post of barangay chairman at Poblacion, Sual on October 29.

Bonzo, now 57, promises in his campaign platform to improve the lot of his constituents and make sports a top priority.

“If lucky and I will be elected as the village chairman of the place where I was born and raised, development of mass-based sports like basketball, cycling, billiards, chess, lawn and table tennis, badminton and taekwondo are my priorities,” said Bonzo.

“And being an ex-policeman with more than 30 years in service, dealing with people was my expertise through COPS (Community Oriented Policing System), a project of PNP. I will use this experience to serve my constituents and my former colleagues,” Bonzo promised.

Bonzo, also a former featherweight professional boxer before mounting the two-wheeled sport, was the race director general in the last two years of the fabled multi-stage summer bikathon now known as Padyak Pinoy.

The five-foot-seven Bonzo placed eight overall on his first try to bag the “Rookie of the Year” plum during the 1975 Tour of Luzon.

Gaining a huge experience during the 1975 big race, he captured the individual championship the following year and also finished third in the 1977 Tour ng Pilipinas.

He’s the 8th of so far 19 national champions that Pangasinan has produced in multi-stage bicycle racing.—JAG,Jr.
