HITACHI NAT’L CRITERIUM GRAND PRIX

PANGASINAN’s bevy of cycling celebrities, spearheaded by the Mangaldan-based Pitaki Boyz, will pedal against the country’s other cycling giants in today’s Criterium Grand Prix to start and finish in front of Matutina’s Restaurant at Tondaligan, Bonuan in Dagupan City.

The bikefest, dubbed as the “Mayor Al Fernandez Cycling Cup”, kicks off at 10:00 a.m. in front and will be run in four categories with cash prizes, trophies and medals at stake.

Brand new mobile phones will also be given to the winners compliments of Smart Bro.

Umingan pride and 2006 Padyak Pinoy champion Santy Barnachea heads the cast of the ‘elite-pro’ category with former national riders Ericson Obosa from Manaoag, Asingan ace Baler Ravina, San Jacinto stalwart Reynaldo Navarro, national sprint king Enrique Domingo and other big names from Manila and nearby provinces.

The ‘All Pangasinan Weekend Warriors’ division will open the race with cycling-surgeon Demosthenes Ydia of Dagupan’s Nazareth Hospital leading the 50 participants.

The non-pro (amateur) event will be paced by Pangasinan’s new cycling sensation Ariel Flores from Mangaldan.

The Masters’ division will be led by three-time Marlboro Tour first runner-up Placido Valdez from Cabanatuan City, with former professionals Roel Gendrano, Elpidio Untalan and well-known businessman Alex Billan.

Only the top five winners in each category will receive cash prizes plus incentives for the sprint winners, according to project director Ric Rodriguez.

The Dagupan City race is the fifth leg of the ongoing 2007 Hitachi National Criterium Grand Prix.

The sixth stage will be at Sta. Rosa, Laguna while the tenth and final leg will be held at Clark Field, Pampanga on December 23.—JAG,Jr.
