DESPITE losing the opening game against arch-rival and reigning titlists University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers, the University of Pangasinan (UPang) Webczars recovered and triumphed in all its seven consecutive matches.

The Webczars, with leads all in double digits, emerged as the topnotcher during the elimination round of the 2007 PRISAA Pangasinan-Dagupan Inter-Collegiate Basketball Invitational Championship, dubbed this year as Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. Cup being held at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome.

The Webczars of Cesar Duque, who earlier bowed to UL, 83-77, routed UL’s conqueror, the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes, 87-74, last August 23. The victory of the Webczars, under Coach Angel Gumarang and supervised by Boy Rayos, over LNU forged a triple tie between the three title-contenders with an identical card of seven wins and one loss each.

The tournament, using the FIBA quotient system triple-tie-breaking rule, ruled that the Webczars had the highest ranking among all the nine teams, giving them an outright berth for the semifinals with UL, which landed second overall.

LNU, which nipped UL, 82-79, last August 16, finished third and had to play the quarterfinal games with a twice-to-beat edge over sixth placer AIE-Commerce College Eagles at 1:00 p.m. on Monday.

Fourth finisher PIMSAT, enjoying likewise a twice-to-beat advantage, tangles with fifth placer PSU at 2:30 p.m.

The winner between LNU and AIE Commerce College will face UPang for the semifinals and the victors between PIMSAT versus PSU to clash with UL, also at the semis.
