THE defending champions, University of Luzon Golden Tigers, are bent on retaining their title starting tomorrow as they face their arch-rival, the University of Pangasinan Webczars, in the best-of-three title duel for the Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. Cup basketball tournament.

It will be held at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome starting at 2:30 p.m.

The multi-titled and slightly-favored Golden Tigers, tutored by Jack Vidal, who dethroned the Webczars last year, will rely on its marquee players former World City College standouts, the wily guards Jonathan Panunciar and Marbin Macalalad, forward Norman Ilao, plus its locals, postman Jenkins Bucao, Martin Callao and beyond-the-arc dexterous shooter Rod Natavio.

On the other side, the erstwhile titlists Webczars, mentored by Angel Gumarang, who frustrated the Golden Tigers during their 2005 title showdown, are fearless and hopeful to avenge their previous defeats. They will bank on their mainstays, rifleman Bryan Santillan, point guards Albert Carcha and Virgilio Olero, center Allan Roquin and forwards Joey Operana and Joey Abalos.

The second game is slated on October 4. The third and final match if necessary is scheduled on October 8, according to the league’s treasurer Seato Gonimil.
