UL faces Lyceum; UPang Webczars battle PIMSAT
MAYOR AL’S CUP SEMI-FINALS
SUFFERING a defeat is not new to the University of Luzon Golden Tigers. They have gone through that before and still managed to win the tiara.
Tomorrow, they will face their conqueror anew, the Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes, and this time in the semifinals of the Mayor Alipio Fernandez, Jr. Cup basketball tournament in the best-of-three series to be held at Dagupan People’s Astrodome at 1:00 p.m.
Despite that unforgettable debacle last August 16 when the Golden Tigers lost a close 82-79 to co-title contender Dukes, the reigning titlists are still high in morale and confident to avenge their defeat and eventually retain their crown.
As they have done in previous games, the team of Jack Vidal will rely on their spitfires Jonathan Panunciar, Norman Ilao, Marbin Macaladlad, Claude Cubo, San Jacinto born Martin Callao and Mangaldan three-point specialist Rod Natavio.
On the other side, the dauntless Dukes, who ousted the AIE Commerce College Eagles, 79-66, last Monday to capture the third slot in the semis will highly depend on its top seven dribblers Lionel Razon, McCris Mabazza, Benjie Labitoria, Cecil Aurelio, Mark Mendoza, Cris Cayabyab and the off-and-on guard Daryl Paningbatan.
Second game at 2:30 p.m. pits 2005 champions and qualifying rounds topnotcher University of Pangasinan Webczars against underdog PIMSAT Red Dragons, also in the best-of-three series.
The Red Dragons entered the semis by outclassing PSU, 110-107, in their final game last Thursday.
According to Seato Gonomil, the league’s treasure, the top two winners in the semis will fight for the title starting October 1st at the same venue, also in the best-of-three encounters.-JAG,Jr.
