Pangasinan prepares for emergency rice supply
LINGAYEN–The Sangguniang Panlalawigan has authorized Governor Amado Espino Jr. to sign a Rice Loan Memorandum of Agreement with the National Food Authority for the immediate procurement of rice to be used in relief operations during calamities.
The resolution, authored by Board Member Von Mark Mendoza of the Second District, said the stockpiling of rice should be resorted to as a “buffer” against possible food shortages during emergency situations.
NFA Western Provincial Manager Edilberto Labatique told the provincial board that his agency provides rice loans to local government units with very minimal interest at one percent per month.
The province intends to procure 500 cavans of rice from the NFA, which allots a maximum of 5,000 cavans for relief operations.
The rice credit will be charged against the five percent calamity fund of the province.
Mendoza said the provincial social welfare development office, which handles the distribution of relief goods, could immediately start the stockpiling of rice in preparation for possible calamity situations, especially during the rainy season. #
