Obosa wins Nerez bikefest

FORMER RP team member Ericson Obosa, who continues to make waves in Pangasinan bicycle road racing, ruled the 2007 PD Cycling Challenge last Sunday.

The sprint-specialist Obosa, 28, from Manaoag, nosed out his two breakaway partners in a mad-dash fashion finish in the last 250 meters to pocket the P20,000 top prize plus a trophy and P600 incentive purse for finishing third thrice at the summit lines.

Tarlac City-born and now Binalonan resident Merculio Ramos, Jr. finished second, towing out Sherwin Carrera, to bag P15,000 plus P800 summit wins and a trophy.

Carrera from San Fabian earned P10,000 plus P1,100 summit rewards and also a trophy.

The three clocked the 268-kilometer distance in seven hours and 53 seconds.

Mangaldanon rider Renato Sembrano and San Jacinto star Reynaldo Navarro came in together eight minutes and 27 seconds off the pace to land fourth and fifth and received P5,000 and P3,000, respectively, plus a medal apiece.

The road battle, which started and finished at the capital town Lingayen, was organized by the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office led by its director, Sr. Supt. Isagani R. Nerez, and Superintendents Ricardo Tamayo and Policarpio Cayabyab.

The event was participated in by 75 professional and amateur cyclists from Pangasinan

The route traversed the central and western parts of the province.

Rounding up the top ten are: Enrique Domingo of San Carlos City, 6th; Baler Ravina of Asingan, 7th; Ariel Flores of Mangaldan, 8th; Santy Barnachea of Umingan, 9th; and Nilo Estayo of Pozorrubio, 10th.

The top 6 placers in the race are all members of the Pitaki Boyz team.

The sixth up to tenth placers received P2,000 each and with a medal apiece.

There were 46 survivors who were given an incentive price of P500 apiece.

The wheel-by-wheel account was aired live over RGMA Super Radyo Dagupan from start to finish with Lingayen alderman Ramon Bataoil flagging off the contestants.

The event was supported by Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr., Dagupan City Mayor Alipio Fernandez, Jr., Dagupan City Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, Rotary Club of Dagupan spearheaded by its president Rudy Ramos, DPWH Region 1 Dir. Engr. Fidel D. Ginez, Engr. Rodolfo Dion, Blandino Caguioa, Kgd. Angel Gumarang and mayors of different municipalities covered by the race.—JAG,Jr.
