NO CHA-CHA THIS TIME

It was a night of unforgettable dancing but no cha-cha music was played.

House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. and wife Gina hosted a big party Sunday night at the newly-built Jimmy Fernandez Stadia in Dagupan to thank his supporters for his victory in the May election as 4th District representative and subsequently an unprecedented fifth term as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The couple, joined by other congressmen, local government officials and members of the media, danced to non-stop boogie, rock and roll, reggae and swing on stage to the delight of the crowd.

De Venecia also danced to the popular song “Itaktak Mo” which he used during the last campaign.

Curiously, cha-cha music was not in the repertoire and intentionally perhaps as there was an effort to forego with the Charter Change, previously advocated by De Venecia.

In attendance were some 5,000 supporters composed of local and barangay officials, including 30 congressmen from the province and elsewhere.

De Venecia also sang a duet with Rep. Ed Zialcita, who charmed the crowd with his rendition of “The Way You Look Tonight”.

In his speech, an elated   De Venecia thanked all his supporters saying, “We triumphed overwhelmingly and at the end, my opponent (in Congress for the speakership) didn’t even run and so today, I reach out my hand in reconciliation and in unity to those who fought against me in the last elections.”

He said he is dedicating his victory to the Lord “because without him, we are nothing”.

A Mass was also presided over by Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz while Father Sonny Ramirez, a popular television personality now based in the Our Lady of Manaoag Shrine, gave his blessings to the speaker. #
