IBP urges NBI, PNP to solve lawyer killings
The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Pangasinan, in a resolution issued last week, has called on the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to double efforts in solving the successive killings of lawyers in the province and prevent further similar crimes.
At the same time, members of the Dagupan City Sangguniang Panlungsod, presided over by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, has invited the heads of the police force and the NBI to their regular session on Tuesday to give details on the ongoing investigations.
Councilor Farah Marie Decano, herself a lawyer, cited the still unsolved murders of members of the IBP Pangasinan chapter.
Two IBP members were recently assassinated, namely: Conrado “Pacpac” Soriano who was killed on
August 27 in San Carlos City, and Alejo Dojillo who was gunned down on September 10 in San Fabian.
Also murdered in recent years by still unidentified assassins were Judge Gary Uson and Atty. Froilan Siobal.
Guns-for-hire are believed to have carried out the killings.
The IBP resolution, which was read by Decano during the SP session Tuesday, also noted that several IBP members in the province are receiving death threats.
The PUNCH learned that in Dagupan City alone, three lawyers have been receiving death threats.
“The lawyers, especially those engaged in active exercise of their profession, tremble in anxiety and fear for their safety as soon as they step out of the portals of their homes and law offices, which can be attributed to their gnawing feelings that they do not receive adequate protection from the agencies charged with their protection,” the IBP said in its resolution.
The IBP asked the PNP and the NBI to immediately track down the guns-for-hire as well as the masterminds.
The lawyers’ group also called on the governor, the provincial board, the city and municipal mayors and their city and town councils to extend full cooperation with the NBI and the PNP in their investigations.#
