Shellfish from W. P’sinan remain red tide-free–DA
No red tide around here.
This was the official message sent out by the Department of Agriculture following another scare that mussels, oysters and other shellfish harvested from the coastal areas of Pangasinan might be red tide contaminated.
The announcement was contained in Shellfish Bulletin No. 18 dated 1 August 2007 issued by DA official Gil Adora and effectively lifting previous warning has now been lifted, making shellfish coming from these areas as safe to eat.
The bulletin describes the coastal waters of Bolinao, Anda, Alaminos and Wawa, Bani as free from toxic red tides.
A few months ago, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources warned of possible red tide contamination of shellfish coming from Wawa, Bani due to previous tests showing red tide organism in shellfish coming from the area.
The shellfish ban is still imposed in the coastal waters in Milagros, Masbate; Juan Lagoon in Matnog and Sorsogon Bay in Sorsogon; Bislig Bay in Bislig City and Hinatuan Bay, Surigao del Sur; Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur; and Balite Bay in Mate, Davao Oriental.
Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and their internal organs, such as gills and intestines, are removed before cooking.–LM
