Nerez cycling kicks off today
THE province’s longest and prime-prized bicycle road race for the 2007 season unwraps today with as many as 90 cyclists expected to participate.
The one-day race, organized by the Philippine National Police Provincial Office under its director, Senior Superintendent Isagani R. Nerez, starts at 9:00 a.m. at the capital town, Lingayen, where it will also finish.
Spearheading the competing cast is last year’s Padyak Pinoy champion Santy Barnachea from Umingan, 2007 Tour first runner-up Baler Ravina of Asingan plus six former national team members.
The road battle will traverse the municipalities of Binmaley, Dagupan City, Calasiao, Sta. Barbara, San Carlos City, Malasiqui, Bayambang, Basista, Urbiztondo, Mangatarem, Aguilar, Bugallon, Labrador, Sual, Alaminos City, Mabini, Banganoda junction (Agno), Bani and Anda.
From Anda, the race’s turning point, the road players will race back through the towns of Bani, Alaminos City, Sual, Labrador and wind-up across the Lingayen PNP station with an approximate distance of 255 kilometers.
Nerez said a total amount of P98,000 in cash prizes, trophies and medals are at stake with the top three victorious riders to pocket P20,000, P15,000 and P10,000, respectively, plus a trophy each.
Fourth placer gets P5,000 while fifth finisher receives P3,000 and sixth to tenth winners earn P2,000 apiece. Fourth up to tenth accomplishers will also be given a medal each.
Superintendents Ric Tamayo and Polly Cayabyab, the project coordinators, said a maximum of 80 survivors will be given P500 each plus a certificate for finishing the grueling race.
The event is supported by Governor Amado Espino Jr., Dagupan City Mayor Al Fernandez, Jr., Dagupan City Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, the Rotary Club of Dagupan City headed by its president Rudy Ramos, DPWH Region 1 Dir. Engr. Fidel D. Ginez, Engr. Rodolfo Dion, Blandino Caguioa, Kgd. Angel Gumarang and mayors of towns covered by the race.—JAG,Jr.
