Nerez bikefest set Aug. 26
INSPIRED by the success of the PD Marathon he organized and held last July 7, Pangasinan Provincial Police Director Sr. Supt. Isagani Nerez is preparing to stage another foot-powered race – cycling this time on August 26.
“The SEA (Southeast Asia) Games is just around the corner and I think this is a good tune-up race for our national riders which I believe most of them are from Pangasinan,” said Nerez.
The bikefest, dubbed as the “PD Cycling Challenge” with the theme “Upholding Pangasinan Excellence”, will start and finish at Lingayen, traversing Binmaley, Dagupan City, Calasiao, Sta. Barbara, San Carlos City, Malasiqui, Bayambang, Basista, Urbiztondo, Mangatarem, Aguilar, Bugallon, Labrador via barangay Magtaking, Sual, Alaminos City, Mabini, Banganoda junction (Agno), Bani and Anda.
From Anda, the race’s turning point, the contestants will travel back to Bani, Alaminos City, Sual, Labrador and end in Lingayen via barangay Domalandan with an approximate total distance of 255 kilometers.
According to Nerez, a total of P98,000 in cash prizes plus trophies and medals are up for grabs with the champion pocketing the top prize of P20,000. The first and second runners-up will receive P15,000 and P10,000, respectively. The top three winners will also receive a trophy each.
Fourth place winner will collect P5,000; fifth finisher, P3,000; sixth to tenth placers, P2,000 apiece. Fourth to tenth placers will also receive a medal each.
Nerez also said that all survivors up to 80th place will be given an incentive prize of P500 each.
“We are giving a chance to everyone to prove their worth so we decided to make the event open to anybody who would like to participate,” he added.
Police Superintendents Ricardo Tamayo and Paul Cayabyab, the race’s overall coordinators, said two summit sprint prizes are also at stake and to be contested at Suasalito point in Sual and at the top of the mountains of barangay Tiep in Bani with second engineering district czar Rodolfo “Boy” Dion and San Carlos-born-now-Texas-based Plandino Caguioa sponsoring the prizes.
“With the unselfish support of the communities, our government leaders and the private sector, we believe that holding sports activities like cycling is the best if not the main way to curb or minimize the drug menace of the country, especially among the youth,” Nerez said.
“Healthy mind, sound body,” Nerez added.—JAG,Jr.
