LINGAYEN–Ample rice supply in the province has been assured following the importation of rice from Vietnam to augment provincial warehouse stock.

According to George Terrado, economist of the National Food Authority (NFA) western Pangasinan branch, the 200,000 sacks of imported Vietnam rice, expected to arrive at Poro Point, La Union anytime soon, will fill the demand within the province until the next harvest season in October-November.

There are 55,032 sacks of rice presently stored at the NFA’s warehouses in Lingayen, Dagupan City, Alaminos City and Mangatarem, Terrado told The PUNCH.

In addition, the local supply of palay for NFA’s milling could reach about 20,000 bags of rice, he said.

Terrado added that other households, farmers and businessmen also have their own supplies as the NFA is not the sole source of rice for people’s needs.

The average daily consumption in Pangasinan is estimated at 10,700 sacks.

Terrado also noted that based on their monitoring, there has been no abrupt increase in the retail price of rice recently despite the prolonged dry spell which has left half of the province’s farmlands untilled.
