Police prepares for revamp

LINGAYEN–As forty-eight new and re-elected mayors officially begin their three-year term by July 1, the provincial police is gearing up for a subsequent revamp of its town chiefs in the province.

The reshuffle is customary at the start of the new term of office of local government officials as mayors usually request to have a police chief of their confidence.

“We want to maintain harmonious relationship with local officials who would make such request for a new police chief, so we go through the process of submitting five nominees that the mayor could choose from,” said Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez, police provincial director.

Nerez also explained that the new mayors typically want a new police chief whom they feel could complement their vision.

As a matter of policy, a transfer of assignment is usually undertaken once a police chief finishes a two-year posting or if an incident arises that prejudices the officer’s position.

For areas with new mayors, Nerez said the reshuffle is intended to dispel any doubt about the political leaning or affiliation of the town police chief to the previous local administration, he added.

Overall, Nerez said the changes will also give opportunity to others to be assigned to a particular area after undergoing basic police officer’s training.-EVA
