Police hold shootfest
LINGAYEN– The 1st Regional Director’s Cup 2007 “Shoot-for-a-Cause” kicked off Thursday at the provincial police office firing range here with some 400 policemen and civilians participating in the fund-raising event for the outreach programs of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Chief Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil, Ilocos police regional director, said this will be the first of a series of events that will also be held in La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.
The main beneficiary will be the PNP Region 1’s outreach projects namely, Pulis Ko, Titser Ko (My Policeman, My Teacher) being implemented in the insurgency-affected hinterlands. In this project, policemen who finished Education courses function doubly as substitute teachers in elementary schools near their detachments in Natividad (Pangasinan), Baguilin (La Union) and Dingras (Ilocos Norte).
Bataoil said his command also helps repair school buildings, provide books and other school supplies to indigent pupils.
Each police participant pays a registration fee of P500 while civilians pay P1,000 each. Sponsors have also pledged donations to the fund.
Bataoil recalled that he also implemented the same project for orphans of media men for their educational assistance when he was still the district director of the Northern Police District.—EVA
