Gina is confident JdV will win 5th term as Speaker
LINGAYEN- Mrs. Gina de Venecia declared on Thursday that she is fully confident that her husband will win in his bid to capture the speakership of the House of Representatives for an unprecedented fifth term.
Mrs. De Venecia said that with three days more to go before the House convenes for the 14th Congress, her husband, Speaker Jose de Venecia is already a run-away winner with 185 congressmen rallying behind him.
Speaker De Venecia is being challenged by Rep. Pablo Garcia of Cebu, a member of the Kabalikat ng Mamamayang Pilipino (Kampi), who is pushing for secret balloting to determine the speakership.
In a talk to newsmen shortly after she was conferred an honorary degree in humanities on Friday by the Pangasinan State University, Mrs. De Venecia said from what she gathered from the supporters of her husband, the proposal was junked following the failure of Garcia’s group to make a decision from July 1 to 16.
She said the tradition of open voting will prevail as she stressed that her husband is confident that the congressmen who pledged him their support will not turn their backs on him come crunch time.
She said Speaker De Venecia was assured of support by 185 congressmen and the 185th who signed the manifesto on Thursday night was Party-list Rep. Archie Defensor Santiago, son of Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago.
All the congressmen of Pangasinan, including those of the solid north led by Deputy House Speaker Eric Singson of Ilocos Sur are united in their support of Speaker de Venecia.
Mrs. de Venecia was conferred with the honorary degree by PSU in recognition of her charitable works in various parts of the country as president and chair of the Congressional Spouses Foundation, Inc.
The conferment rite, coincided with the 14th Biennial Celebration of the PSU, was attended by Dr. Carlito Puno, chairman of the Commission on Higher Education.
The doctorate degree was the third for Mrs. De Venecia. She was conferred similar honorary degrees by the Mindanao State University in Marawi City and the Laguna State University just four months ago.—LM
