BINALONAN–Mayor Ramon Guico Jr. has set his sights on a second term as president of the influential League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP).

The head of the LMP, a group composed of more than 1,000 municipal chiefs, is considered as the mayors’ direct link to Malacañang.

Guico, a cousin of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, told The PUNCH in a phone interview that,” I am ready for the next challenge”.

There are currently no apparent challengers to Guico.

“I am ready for another term if my colleagues will entrust me with a new mandate to lead them,” he said.

Guico first needs to be elected president of his own provincial chapter, the Pangasinan Mayors League, so he could qualify to aspire anew as LMP president. The LMP has advised all its provincial chapters that they could start electing their new set of officers June 30.

He said he has set a meeting among all the 44 town mayors in Pangasinan on July 17 at Ruperto’s Restaurant in this town where they will elect their new set of officers.

Guico added that he would welcome other aspirants to the position but he is hoping that his performance in the past three years will be enough to convince his colleagues that he is the best man for the job.

Once mandated anew as Pangasinan Mayors’ League president, Guico said he will run again as LMP president so that big projects tied with foreign funding agencies like the World Bank and the European Union shall be continued especially for upland development.

He said the funding agencies are awaiting results of the LMP elections.—EVA
