Guico retains post as Pangasinan Mayors’ League head

BINALONAN–Mayor Ramon Guico Jr. was re-elected president of the Pangasinan Mayors’ League for the third straight term during elections held here Tuesday with 40 out of 44 mayors in attendance.

GUICO

Guico, a cousin of President Gloria Macapa-gal Arroyo, vowed to make it a “better and stronger” group and called on his colleagues to collaborate in promoting tourism in the province in the next three years.

He said in tandem with Governor Amado Espino Jr., he wants to help awaken Pangasinan, which he described “a sleeping giant”.

Other elected officers include: Sta. Barbara Mayor Reynaldo Velasco (executive vice president), Anda Mayor Nestor Pulido (1st district vice president), Lingayen Mayor Ernesto Castañeda Jr. (2nd district vice president), Calasiao Mayor Roy Macanlalay (3rd district vice president), San Jacinto Mayor Rudy Columbres (4th district vice president), Villasis Mayor Nonato Abrenica (5th district vice president), San Manuel Mayor Salvador Perez (6th district vice president).

Also elected were San Fabian Mayor Mojamito Libunao Jr. as secretary-general, Mapandan Mayor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim (treasurer), Rosales Mayor Ricardo Revita (auditor), Sison Mayor Carmen “Kimi” Cojuangco and Pozorrubio Mayor Emma Chan (business managers), Binmaley Mayor Simplicio Rosario (public relations officer) and Tayug Mayor Carlos Trece Mapili as General Legal Counsel.

STEPPING STONE

Winning the league’s provincial chapter is a stepping-stone for Guico in his plan to be re-elected president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) composed of 1,510 members nationwide.

He said the President has given her go signal for him to again run for the LMP’s top post.

The LMP election is tentatively scheduled on August 13.

If he wins as LMP head, Guico, said he also wants to lead the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP), the umbrella organization of all local government units’ leagues.

Guico is currently the executive vice president of ULAP and the most senior member.

He said he is confident and feels that he has about an 80% chance of winning the post. He said he does not feel it will be too big a responsibility to lead the two groups because “I simply make the decision while the secretariat does the work”.—EVA
