LINGAYEN-More than 2,000 cases of gastroenteritis have been recorded in the province from January to June 22 this year, according to data from the Provincial Health Office here.

However, no related deaths were reported, according to Dr. Ana Theresa de Guzman, assistant provincial health officer.

The towns with the highest number of cases are: San Carlos City (240), Dasol (175), Mapandan (160), Asingan (153), Natividad (122), Lingayen (113), Bayambang (118) and Alaminos City (105).

De Guzman said most of the gastroenteritis cases were a result of unsafe drinking water and unsafe food preparations.

The provincial health office is also monitoring the Safe Water System program of the Department of Health indeed  there have  gastroenteritis incidence in designated pilot areas this year.

The project, where chlorinated water with Hyposol is used, was implemented last year and one local manufacturer from Pangasinan is behind the project.

Latest data show that there are still cases of gastroenteritis in the pilot Areas, including Basista (37) and Sta. Barbara (41) among others.

De Guzman suspects that people may not be using the Hyposol solution consistently with their drinking water probably due to its unpleasant odor.-EVA
