Espino: We’ll reclaim Pangasinan’s lost glory
Strong economic program vowed
LINGAYEN– The new governor of Pangasinan, Amado Espino Jr., took his oath of office on Saturday, bringing fresh winds of hope to his more than 1.5 million constituents.
Espino, who was congressman in the second district for two terms after a lustrous career in the military and the police, is expected by Pangasinenses to push the province forward, reclaiming and strengthening its leadership in the areas of agriculture, tourism and investments as he had pledged.
Espino scored a phenomenal victory over Mrs. Eloise Manzano-Agbayani, wife of the outgoing governor whose family is considered a political institution in the province.
More popularly known as “Spine”, he campaigned on a platform of efficient and transparent governance, a strong economic program to solve widespread poverty and joblessness in the province, human resource development with emphasis on upgrading basic education and building of strategic infrastructure projects.
“I call upon all leaders and Pangasinenses to help the province make a fresh start. We have a lot of catching up to do to reclaim our foothold as a premier province,” Espino told his province mates during the oath-taking ceremony.
FRESH FUNDS
Even before officially assuming his post, Espino – together with Sta. Barbara’s incoming Mayor Reynaldo Velasco – already secured a P10 million fund from the Department of Transportation and Communication through Secretary Leandro Mendoza.
Mendoza has also approved the request of the new governor for the dredging of Sual Port to accommodate bigger cargo vessels.
At the same time, Mendoza committed funds for the engineering, design and feasibility study for a proposed commercial airport project in Sta. Barbara.
Aside from these, Espino vowed to restore peace and order in Pangasinan in the wake of the still unsolved political killings of San Carlos City Mayor Julian Resuello and San Manuel Vice Mayor Bonie Apilado.
Espino also outlined his other top priorities as tourism and investments promotions, environmental protection, sports development and hosting of national and international events using the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center.
Meanwhile, former President Ramos welcomed the election of Governor Espino even as he urged his fellow Pangasinenses “to move ahead and together perform reform and transform for a more bountiful Pangasinan and more competitive Philippines.”
Ramos rallied the people of Pangasinan behind the leadership of Governor Espino “to meet the needs for an aggressive and pro-active investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion Plan and Programs – one that is specific enough to tell potential investors where they can put in their investment capital, what types of business to go into, and how to get started.”—LM
