Canto seeks herbal garden in all Dagupan schools, homes

THE doctor is in and on a roll.

After  pushing for the establishment of ‘Botika sa Barangay’ in every barangay, Councilor  Jesus Canto has filed another resolution in the second  session calling on all schools and homes in the city to put up herbal gardens in order to promote the use of alternative but cheap sources of medicines.

Canto, the only doctor in the city council and chair of the city council’s committee on health, said this is timely and important because of the prohibitive costs of medicines nowadays.

Pointing out that there are herbal plants as effective as medicines being sourced from drug stores, Canto called on all people in the city to put up herbal gardens in schools and in their homes.

“Nowadays when the cost of medicines have become very prohibitive, it is time for the rural folks to plant medicinal herbs in their backyard which they can readily use in case they get sick,” said Canto.

As former head of the Region 1 Medical Center, Canto initiated the planting of a herbal garden at the hospital extension in Bonuan Binloc that became a model for the entire Region 1.

“It is time we go back to the basics by using plants for our own medicines,” he added.

Canto said that the Department of Health has been promoting the use of herbal medicine.

The public elementary and high schools are being called on by the councilor to spearhead the putting up of herbal gardens that could become show windows for the whole city.–LM
