Executive to legislative

LINGAYEN–Gov. Victor Agbayani said on Thursday he will suit up in the new role given him by the people as congressman of the second district of Pangasinan when the 14th Congress opens on July 23.

In a talk to newsmen prior to the unveiling of the statue of his late father, former Gov. Aguedo Agbayani, at the capitol ground,  the outgoing governor  Agbayani admitted that he has yet to learn in his new post as congressman.

“We have to learn the ropes in the new role that had been given me,” said Agbayani who served as governor for three terms spanning nine years.

Although he noted that being a congressman would not be so different from the position he assumed as assemblyman of the province in the Batasang Pambansa, the parliament during the Marcos era.

“That was a parliamentary form of government which we had before,” he added.

Agbayani’s stint as member of the Batasang Pambansa was, however, short-lived following the 1986 Edsa Revolution that toppled Marcos.

In the election for the province’s members of the Batasang Pambansa, Agbayani topped the race despite being a neophyte in politics and who ran as an independent.

He was ahead of the other winners, namely then Information Minister Gregorio Cendana, then Agrarian Reform Minister Conrado Estrella, the late Judge Felipe de Vera, Demetrio Demetria and Fabian Sison.—LM
