LINGAYEN–Various Muslim communities across Pangasinan, the provincial police and local government leaders have signed an agreement promising to fight lawlessness in their respective towns or cities.

Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez, provincial police director, lauded the covenant signed Tuesday at the police provincial headquarters here, saying  “This will lead to a better understanding among our Muslim brothers as well as to boost our peacekeeping efforts”.

For their part, the signatories from 18 Muslim Community Associations said, “Ang aming pagkilos upang labanan ang katiwalian at ipinagba-bawal na gawain ay karapatan at tungkulin naming ipatupad sa pamamagitan ng pantay-pantay,  bukas na gawain sa lahat at katapatan para sa aming kabuhayan at kaunlaran at katahimikan (Our move to fight wrong doing and other prohibited acts is a right and a duty that we hope to implement fairly for our livelihood,  progress and peace).”

He said this will enhance community awareness through their anti-drug efforts and  other anti-crime operations.

Muslim leaders have decried wrong perception among Christian people pointing at them as the ones behind illegal activities in some areas, especially ille gal drugs.

Nerez said it is unfair to just point an accusing finger to the Moros, adding that in any group, whether religious or otherwise, it has its own bad eggs.

He added that Moro leaders have vowed to police their own ranks and to seriously implement the terms of the agreement.
