With signed pledges from 167 of his colleagues in the House of Representatives, Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. is self-assured that he will be re-elected to a fifth term as Speaker of the House.

De Venecia said that those who have confirmed their support include members from his Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino, Liberal Party, Nationalist People’s Coalition, Nacionalista Party, and Partido Demokratiko Sosyalista ng Pilipinas.

He added that he also has won the support from 12 partylist representatives and from the Cebuano legislators as well.

The House is composed of 245 representatives and a majority vote for the speakership requires at least 124.

“On the basis of party-to-party configuration, I think we have the overwhelming support of the newly elected congressmen and congresswomen of the Philippines,” he said.

Meanwhile, De Venecia’s wife, Gina, said the speaker is using the same formula when he ran and won for his re- election as Pangasinan congressman in last month’s elections.

“It’s hard work always running scared and never too confident. There’s no substitute for hard work,” she said.–EVA
