JdV now seeks moratorium on Cha-cha

CHARTER change can wait.

After making an unexpected pitch for it, House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., while still embroiled in a battle for the speakership in the House of Representatives, corrects himself and re-states the new priorities for the upcoming 14th Congress which formally opens on July 23.

De Venecia spelled out his new position in a talk to newsmen on Thursday when he graced the birthday bash of incoming Dagupan City Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr., whom he supported during the election.

De Venecia said the moratorium on charter change will enable lawmakers to focus their attention to meaningful legislation that could further boost the economy.

He stressed that the moratorium is needed so the 14th Congress can preserve the gains made on the economy by the administration of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

“For 15 years, we’ve been fighting for cha-cha (charter change) but there should be a moratorium today because we need to concentrate on the economy first,” he stressed.

He said the new Congress is expected to craft legislations that will consolidate the gains of the economy and improve it further.

He warned that unless this is done, the country will experience another short period of boom, and a longer period of bust. —- lm
