MALASIQUI-—Newly elected Pangasinan Third District Rep. Rachel Arenas has pledged her support to House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. in his bid to retain the speakership at the House of Representatives in the coming 14th Congress.

“Tito Joe is a tried and tested leader, a world-class caliber. As one of the “housemates”, I will be very happy to support him in his speakership bid,” Arenas said in a phone interview with The PUNCH.

Arenas said she owes a debt of gratitude to De Venecia for his support for her candidacy during the campaign period.

“If the father of the house is a good provider, cares, protects and supports his children, maintains good standards of morality, a peacekeeper, God-fearing, wouldn’t you be happy to have him for a lifetime?” Arenas said.

De Venecia is aiming for a fifth straight term as speaker.

“I was witness on how he was viciously attacked by his political opponents yet he remained calm and sober, very forgiving and fatherly to those who wronged him like the father in the biblical story on the prodigal son,” she said.

Aside from being her partymate, as De Venecia is the president of the administration Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, she said it also counts that they are provincemates.

“Of course, I expect to see unity and harmony prevail in the House. This could be attained if my fellow congressmen would rally behind to support one leader in the person of Tito Joe,” she said.–EVA
