Yes, he’s retiring but certainly not taking time to rest.

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz has announced that he intends to retire soon and pursue his long-time dream of taking up a doctorate degree in Philosophy of Law and writing more books.

Cruz told The PUNCH he is finally optimistic that his long pending request to resign will soon be granted by the Catholic Church.

The outspoken archbishop, a former president of Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines and one of the most pro-active church leaders on social issues, said he first submitted his letter of resignation way back in 2001, but this was rejected.

Cruz has followed up on this and he was given the impression that the committee that decides on such requests is now seriously considering it.

Cruz said he wants a young bishop to take over.

“I want to continue writing books,” said Cruz, who holds a Masters Degree in philosophy.

He recently completed a book on priest-politician, referring in particular to the May 14 elections victory of Pampanga Governor-elect Ed Panlilio, a priest-turned-politician.

The book will be out first week of July in time for the meeting of the bishops, he said.

A prolific writer who has published 28 books on the Canon Law for students, marriage, and media practice among others and maintains a blogsite with web address www.ovc.blogspot.com.

Cruz, chairman of Krusada ng Bayan Laban sa Jueteng (People’s Crusade Against Jueteng), will soon be meeting with his colleagues in the group to discuss who will take over his post. –EVA
