She’s an astute businesswoman.

No one would have suspected that at age 33, Sally Lopez, a fish trader from Barangay Salapingao Dupo, Dagupan City, could not read nor write.

But she does not intend to stay that way.

Lopez has recently sought the assistance of a private tutor so she can begin to acquire these two basic learning skills which she knows are very important.

In an interview with The PUNCH, she said she used to spend a considerable amount of money on voice calls to communicate with her business contacts and customers instead of using the cheaper short messaging system (sms), now more popularly known as “texting”.

Now that she has started “going to school” at the Potter’s Clay Tutorial Center here under the tutelage of Teacher Grace Pontawe, she is learning and enjoying how to read and write.

Prior to this, she used her own “codes” to record her business transactions and boasted that those who owed her money could not pull a fast one over her.

According to Pontawe, Lopez is a fast learner and has a high comprehension level and can now read Tagalog words.

During the interview, Lopez proudly showed the book she is reading titled“Pambata’t Matanda Pampamilya Mga kwento ukol sa buhay at pag-ibig, pakikipagsapalaran at kababalaghan” by C.S. Canonigo and Teresita Basadre, which she bought in a bookstore to practice her reading and comprehension skills.

Lopez is not fazed by the fact that most of her classmates are young children. Her eldest child, aged 16, also helps her practice with her reading at home.–EVA
