Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr., who was reelected as congressman for the Fourth District, is confident that the speakership of the House of Representatives is again in the bag for him.

In a phone interview on Thursday, De Venecia, who was in Manila, said he has received assurance from all political parties that coalesced with the administration of their overwhelming support for his fifth unprecedented term as Speaker when the 14th Congress opens in July.

The assurance was made by these parties after de Venecia’ own Lakas Christian Muslim Democrats captured 98 seats in the House of Representatives in the May 14 election.

“That’s now about 200 congressmen and congresswomen from a total of 219 all over the country,” De Venecia said.

The Kabalikat ng mga Mamamayang Pilipino (Kampi) produced 48 congressmen, 30 from the Nationalist People’ Coaliton (NPC), 21 from the Liberal Party Atienza wing, four from the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) and three from the Partido ng Demokratiko Sosyalista ng Pilipinas.

He thanked Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno, Kampi chairman, for endorsing him for another term as house speaker.

He said leaders of the different parties called on him to pledge their support for him and affirmed their strong alliance with Lakas-CMD of which he is president.

It’s really a blessing. Those who said that I will have a difficult time in Pangasinan and in getting back the speakership were proved wrong. The blessings are continuously coming and pouring in,” de Venecia said.

A fifth term for de Venecia will make him the longest-serving Speaker of the House of Representatives in the history of the country.—LM
