Dagupan Karate Team bags medals
20TH NATIONAL OPEN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The Dagupan City Karate Team, which receives support from the city government, brought home one gold, two silvers and one bronze medal from the 20th National Open Karate Championships held May 3-6 at the St. La Salle University in Bacolod City.
Bagging the gold in the 14-15 Boys Kata category was Fidel Salvador Reyes from the University of Luzon. Reyes also won a bronze in the 14-15 Kumite.
Jayson Ramil Macaalay of Special Sci ence Lyceum Northwestern won the silver in the 14-15 Boys Kata while Gerard Martin Tamayo of Dagupan City National High School got another silver in the 12-13 Boys Kata.
Winners in the event, which was participated in by the best players from every region, earned qualifying points for membership in the Philippine Training Pool for the forthcoming World Cadets Championships in Turkey and the South East Asian Games in Thailand in December.
One of the highlights of the championship’s opening ceremony was a Kata demonstration of 6-year old John Enrico Vasquez, who performed Kushangku, an advance Kata of Wado Ryu. Vasquez was the champion in the 6-7 Boys Kata category during the Philippine Olympic Festival North-Central Luzon/Cordillera Championships. He has also been awarded a special recognition for performing advance Kata at his young age.
