Archbishop: I’m not endorsing anyone

LINGAYEN-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz has, for the record, stressed that he is not endorsing any candidate.

“I did not really endorse Mayor Lim,” Cruz told The PUNCH following a press release issued by Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim, who is running for the fourth district congressional seat, claiming that the province’s highest ranking prelate is supporting him and his son Marc Brian Lim, a mayoralty candidate.

Cruz maintained his earlier stand that unlike other religious leaders, he believes he should not endorse anyone for any position.

He added that his campaign is intended to help in educating voters in choosing the right candidates with honesty, integrity, and willingness to serve.

The press release was issued by Lim’s camp after the father and son team visited Cruz and sought his blessings Thursday.

“Everybody is using me,” Cruz said, noting that some candidates use video footages or photos taken during their visits to him at the Archbishop’s Palace as part of their campaign materials.

He clarified that all these aspirants, from senators to councilors, regardless of their political affiliation, only went to him and asked for his blessings which he willingly gave.

He also said he “was just stating a fact” when he told Lim and his companions, together with some mediamen, how he appreciates Lim’s previous all-out  support in all the rallies he initiated that led to the ouster of then President Joseph   Estrada and against Charter Change, among others.

Lim is running against House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. The speaker had also visited the prelate and also had cordial exchange of pleasantries with each other.—EVA
