THE University of Pangasinan UPang Webczars registered a convincing win over a tall and hefty Mazo Law Firm team from Baguio City, 84-47, in an exhibition game during the opening rites of Barangay Bolosan Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Basketball Tournament held at Bolosan Gymnasium last Sunday.

The Mazo Law Firm team is the same squad that beat the National Prisaa-bound Selection team of Dagupan City during an elimination match in the Panagbenga Festival Cup held in February.

The opening tip-off was marked by lead changes with both teams displaying an array of impeccable shots from the outside and strong inside plays. The 1st quarter ended with the Baguio-based dribblers protecting a one-point lead, 20-19.

In the second quarter, UPang head coach Angel Gumarang shifted his patented 1-2-2 defense to relentless man to man pressure defense that rattled their foes and slowly pulled his team away, registering a solid 48-27 advantage at halftime.

The Webczars never looked back as their lead ballooned to 30 points at 66-36.

“The year-long training is manifesting good results. I hope they (players) will continue doing it,” said the proud Gumarang in an interview after their victory.

Team captain Albert Carcha top scored for the Webczars with 22 points while Llenel Manalo contributed 18 points. Arnel Llorente scored 16 and Dindo Mapanao added 12.
