The PUNCH is RP’s 2006 best edited provincial paper
The SUNDAY PUNCH and seven other regional newspapers, one national broadsheet, one magazine and five writers were honored by the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for their outstanding work in community journalism and excellence in writing for children during its Annual Membership Meeting on April 23-24 at the Orchid Garden Suites.
Named as winners in the national search for the 11th Annual Community Press Awards in the weekly category were: SundayPUNCH (Dagupan City) as best edited paper, Baguio Midland Courier (Baguio City) for best in photojournalism and business reporting, Bandillo ng Palawan (Puerto Princesa City) for best in environmental reporting, The Mindanao Cross (Cotabato City) for best editorial page.
In the daily category, Sun.Star Davao (Davao City) won four awards, namely best in photojournalism, economic reporting, environmental reporting and best edited paper. Cebu Daily News (Cebu City) won for best editorial page.
The PUNCH has been cited in the past for best in photojournalism, business reporting, environmental reporting and best editorial page.
Antonio Meloto, founder of the Gawad Kalinga, this year’s keynote speaker, and Amado Macasaet, PPI chairman and publisher of Malaya, presented special trophies and P15,000 cash prizes to the winners in the five categories for both weekly and daily publications.
The awards program is annually supported by Malaya, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Standard Today, BusinessWorld, The Philippine Star and Journal Group of Publications.
This year’s board of judges was composed of Arnold Belleza, BusinessWorld executive editor (chairman), Pedro ‘Boo’ Chanco III, BENPRES Holdings Corp. senior vice-president, Yvonne Chua, U.P. Department of Journalism professor, Elisea Gozun, former Secretary, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and Dr. Violet Valdez, Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism executive director.
Awarded in the 6th Child-Friendly Newspaper and Journalist Awards were: Philippine Daily Inquirer (national), Baguio Midland Courier (weekly) and Leyte-Samar Daily Express (daily) as “child-friendly newspapers of the year”; Baby Magazine as child-friendly magazine; The Freeman’s KidStuff, Cebu City as child-friendly newspaper section; Michael Tan’s Raising babies of the Philippine Daily Inquirer as best column (national), Tony Figueroa’s “Saving the Juveniles” of the Mindanao Times, Davao City as best column (weekly); Nicolas Tayag’s “Special kids: Different Learning Disabilities” of Health Care Magazine as best story (national), Stella Estremera’s Lead them back home of Sun.Star Davao as best story, (weekly). Trisha Joi Esperanza of Baguio Midland Courier was named Child-Writer of the Year.
Both awards programs are administered independently by the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) every year.
