PPI, UNICEF award outstanding newspapers
The country¹s most outstanding regional newspapers will again take the center stage, when the winners in the Philippine Press Institute Annual Community Press Awards are announced in its 11th Annual Membership Meeting this Monday and Tuesday at the Orchid Garden Suites Manila. The other major awards program is the PPI- UNICEF Child-Friendly Newspaper and Journalist Awards.
Celebrating eleven years of excellence in community journalism, the prestigious awards program honors community newspapers that have shown exemplary work in editing, science and environmental reporting, business and economic reporting, photojournalism and editorial. The winners were selected from among the 87 member-newspapers of the Institute in the regions whose past issues have been evaluated by the regional screening committee and
national board of judges.
The Sunday Punch has been selected one of the nominees under the weekly category.
Antonio P. Meloto, founder of Gawad Kalinga will address the 2006 Annual Community Press Awards. Meloto was chosen keynote speaker for his distinctive contribution to community service. He was awarded the distinguished Ramon Magsaysay for Community Leadership in 2006.
Now on its sixth year, the Child-Friendly Awards program will again give recognition to the outstanding child writer, journalists writing for children, and articles written on children. Having won Newspaper of the Year for five years, the Philippine Daily Inquirer will be elevated to the Hall
of Fame.This year¹s PPI general membership meeting gathers publishers and editors of member newspapers nationwide to discuss various concerns. This also includes a presentation on the Avian Influenza and launching of the manual on Civic Journalism by author and media critic Vergel Santos. Three journalists will also be given special citation by UNICEF for their stories
on the Avian Influenza.The annual event is supported by Malaya, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Journal Group, The Philippine Star, Manila Standard Today, BusinessWorld, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation (TCCEC), United Nations Children¹s Fund (UNICEF), and the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE).
