The Lim camp welcomed the move of the Commission on Election (Comelec) to investigate the alleged massive vote-buying activities by House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. in the fourth district.

Lawyer Francisco Baraan, legal counsel and spokesman of congressional bet and Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim, said he has in his possession evidence of De Venecia’s vote-buying spree, including TV video footages showing the Speaker distributing insurance cards valued at P100,000 to potential voters in the district.

“One tape even showed JDV presenting an elderly person giving his testimony that he has already used the insurance card given by the Speaker,” Baraan said.

Meanwhile, the Genuine Opposition yesterday lauded the media for their twin exposes on the massive vote buying being engineered by House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. and Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales in their efforts to win votes.

“We were right on target in exposing the massive vote-buying of Speaker de Venecia in his desperate attempt to survive another term at the 4th congressional district in Pangasinan,” said GO spokesman Adel Tamano.

“So this is the vaunted Lakas political machinery which Speaker de Venecia is now talking about. Resorting to massive vote buying using public funds just to win votes?” asked Tamano.

Last week, Tamano cited field reports that emanated from the Lim camp that De Venecia has been on a ‘vote buying spree’ from reportedly distributing P30,000 each to barangay chairmen, P5,000 each to barangay councilmen, P100,000 worth of insurance to barangay tanods and health workers, P1,000 to all government employees in various towns, including teachers who would be members of the board of election officers on May 14.

This, however, was promptly denied by De Venecia who said the funds being distributed were in fact party funds distributed to party leaders.
