LGUs to continue Lingayen coastal management
LINGAYEN-Heads of local government units (LGUs) in western Pangasinan, along with the provincial government, vowed to carry on with the model Coastal Resource Management (CRM) project launched in Lingayen Gulf in 2002 in a bid to save their coastal areas from further degradation.
Mayors Nestor Pulido of Anda, Gabriel Navarro of Bani, Alfonso Celeste of Bolinao and Hernani Braganza of Alaminos City joined hands to stress the need to continue with the Lingayen Gulf Sagip Project, which is due to expire in December this year.
Implemented by the Marine Environment Resources Foundation attached to the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute, the project was started in December 2002 using a P88 million grant from the Royal Netherlands government.
Project director Susan Lucero explained that the Lingayen Gulf Sagip Project aims to establish a coastal resource management blueprint that will help the LGUs and other stakeholders in rehabilitating and protecting the Lingayen Gulf.
“We help them out (LGUs) and try to co-manage with them the coastal resource management technology system,” said Lucero during the opening of the Learning Center of the Lingayen Gulf Sagip Project on Wednesday as part of the celebration of the Pista’y Dayat.
Mrs. Paula Schindeler, second secretary of the Royal Netherlands embassy in Manila, was the guest of honor during the opening of the Learning Center located in front of the provincial capitol.
Lucero said they have signed CRM partnership agreements with the LGUs and stakeholders detailing the responsibilities of each sector in the coastal management effort.
